Line Up Announced for Comedy Carpet Live

Comedy Carpet Live 2013

Comic royalty and silent movie stars will lead the way in Blackpool’s annual comedy festival – Comedy Carpet Live.

A stellar line-up has been announced for the event which will take place at the end of July.

Omid Djalili will headline a night at the Winter Gardens Opera House supported by, stand-up Mark Watson, Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss and Radio 2 Comedy Awards winner Lucy Beaumont.

A second night in the Opera House will see nationally acclaimed comedian Paul Merton present Silent Clowns as he hosts a fantastic selection of the very best in silent film comedy. Paul will be sharing his unparalleled expertise and passion for these early gems showcasing the work of comedy greats such as Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy.

This marks Blackpool’s second annual Comedy Carpet Live and organisers have moved the event from Easter to the end of July, immediately prior to the start of the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe.

With the recent worldwide success of the multi award winning silent movie The Artist, Paul Merton said he is looking forward to bringing an exciting new dimension to this year’s event with the presentation of one of the greatest silent movies of all time.

He said: “I have a great fondness for Blackpool and with the town’s rich history of comedy, it is appropriate that we will screen one of the best silent movies as part of the Comedy Carpet Live Festival at the end of July.

“I will be presenting “Safety Last” starring Harold Lloyd (where he dangles from the clock handles at the top of a skyscraper) and featuring a band of skilled musicians who are able to improvise together to help create a magnificent atmosphere in the Opera House Theatre.

“Audiences will experience seeing Harold Lloyd deliver a masterclass in visual comedy as it was first presented in cinemas in 1923.”

Meanwhile Omid Djalili is looking forward to visiting Blackpool. He said: “This will be a welcome return to Blackpool and I am honoured to learn that my name has been included on the wonderful Comedy Carpet public work of art in front of BlackpoolTower alongside so many comedy legends.

“I am looking forward to being part of the Comedy Carpet Live Festival in a town that is synonymous with live entertainment.”

Marketing Blackpool is organising Comedy Carpet Live in conjunction with show producers and artiste management business Showbizworks – the company behind last year’s event.

Chris Pope, Events Organiser at Marketing Blackpool, said: “We are delighted to once again be working with Showbizworks on what promises to be a really exciting comedy weekend.

“We have moved this year’s event to the end of July as most of the acts involved will be appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe just a few days later and Blackpool provides the perfect ground for them ahead of that.

“Our aim is for Comedy Carpet Live to appeal to as wide a market as possible. We believe that an evening of entertainment with these great stand-up comedians combined with Paul Merton’s silent movie event will attract a wide range of visitors.”

Showbizworks Director Martin Blore added: “This year’s Comedy Carpet Live provides the perfect mix of both household names and up and coming comedy talent.

“So many comic legends have graced Blackpool’s stages throughout history and the town provides the perfect platform to not only celebrate those legends, but to also embrace and celebrate fresh, new talent.”
